VAN HORN started its programm as an artist run non-commercial space with a row of exhibitions by icons like e.g. R.Crumb, Rudolf Steiner or Russ Meyer. From 2006 on the space attended international artfairs nevertheless keeping it's non-profit origins. In 2008 the gallery was founded in Duesseldorf. In 2009 the gallery was re-founded and moved to a new and bigger location, opening with the first solo-exhibition of the legendary german artist Reinhard Mucha in a decade.
VAN HORN is named after a small village in Texas on the way from El Paso to Marfa.
The galleries founder, Daniela Steinfeld, spent several months as artist in residence at Donald Judd's Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas.
Out of reverence for Judd's multifaceted approach and respect towards his attitude she chose VAN HORN as name for the artist space which became the gallery.
Since it's beginning the gallery blends international young and mid-career artists together with positions like Cady Noland, Mucha, WOLS and outsider positions like Crumb, Russ Meyer or Miroslav Tichy. Regularly a special person, artist, curator or collector is invited to curate an outstanding exhibition for the gallery.
We enable inernational young to midcareer artists to introduce their work to a german audience, often showing them for the first time in Germany. Due to it's origins in Duesseldorf the contact to the Kunstakademie is especially close. We're honoring the history and high quality of artists from Duesseldorf and are very engaged in extending this special field into the future. Therefore we're not only supporting and accompanying artists that studied here - often enabling their first solo exhibitions and helping them to build an international career - we also work closely with a small selection of Düsseldorf artists from an older generation - whose Oeuvre we place in a new and invigorating context.
We're advising private clients as well as companies in the art of collecting and living with art. Our approach is individual, considering the requirements, wishes and ideas of each client. In our advisory practice we're creating an open field, working with a variety of artists and galleries to meet our clients needs.
IN 2014 the VAN HORN SOCIETY was founded. It is dedicated to the specific, the other, the obscure or forgotten - the gems that can be found in the peripheral areas of art and photography: http://www.vanhornsociety.com/
The VAN HORN SOCIETY does projects in irregular intervals at diverse locations.
In January 2017 VAN HORN opened a second location, an c. 160 sqm exhibition space including storage – the new VAN HORN SCHAULAGER.
The Schaulager is located in an industrial area in Düsseldorf-Lierenfeld. It takes ca. five minutes by car from the gallery in Flingern to the showroom. The showroom opens up the possibility to organize exhibitions independently of the gallery program and the art fair calendar. This allows us to present the works of our artists all year round and also to realize projects that extend the gallery program. The showroom is on view by appointment only.
